Mindset is Made Up

Several posts ago, I shared my acronym for Mindset. I will use 7 posts to expand on each one. Yet, the posts may occur over a longer period than 7 weeks as I will take the liberty to share a new insight or example of mindset along the way.

My current acronym for Mindset:

M = Made Up
I   = Individual
N = New
D = Different
S  = Shift
E = Evolve
T = Truth

Our personal Mindset is Made Up from our Individual experiences and by accepting information. To have a New Mindset, you have to be willing to think and explore Different perceptions which creates a Shift in your Mindset and allows you to Evolve to a new level of Truth for yourself.

Our Mindset, whatever it is… about whatever it is about, is Made Up!What? How can it be Made Up when it is a fact, it is a truth?

Let’s say you have a belief that it hard to find new contacts as your sales prospects. Is that a fact? Or is it something that you have created a mindset about? If anyone in your company or industry says it’s easy to discover new prospects – then are they lying? How is their truth different from yours? Where did your viewpoint come from and where did theirs?

We create mindsets from information and understanding received over the years, especially messages imprinted in our initial experiences with something. If your first experiences with selling were with someone who said that the hardest part about sales is prospecting… then you may have bought that as being a fact. When in reality it was information that the person shared from his/her viewpoint… not from truth. When you accepted it, then it got made up and became your mindset also. And the same can be said about the person who believes prospecting is fun.

Yes there are many other explanations or influences on your mindset toward prospecting… this is just one small example. The question to ask yourself is what are you making up? What in your sales process is causing your difficulty or what in your daily work activities are you unenthusiastic about? Could this be the result of previously accepted information that created your mindset?

Once you realize that a mindset is Made Up… then you can change it. There are many suggestions of ways to change, most of which indicate that it takes weeks and months and hard work.
