Skillset verses Mindset

In your opinion, is there more impact on success from skillset or mindset? Can you be successful with a low skillset and a great mindset? Or a high skillset and a challenging mindset?  What can guarantee success?

Guarantee success? Is that possible? I propose it is when you align the skillset of the individual with the job requirements, you ensure that the competency of the skillset is optimized, and the individual’s mindset is integrated within their conscious goals and subconscious beliefs.

If someone has a low skillset and has low self confidence, there will be no success regardless of the position.

If someone has a low skillset and an integrated mindset, there is untapped potential yet limited results.

If someone has a high skillset with low self confidence, they will experience frustrating results due to success/sabotage/failure looping.

If someone has a high skillset and an integrated mindset, that creates sustainable success.

Do you recognize yourself in one of the descriptions? If in the last one… congrats. If not, what can you do to access sustainable success?

If your skillset is low, then reflect on if the position you are in is something that you want to continue with. If not, then determine what your strongest skillsets are and begin looking for a position that uses those skills. If you do want to continue with your current position, then explore what the most important skills are for the position. Are they skills that you can learn? Explore ways to learn what you can via the Internet, interviewing people working in similar positions, reading a variety of books on the area or finding workshops or training sessions to learn the skill – whatever it may be.

If your mindset is what is limiting you due to low confidence, unable to move out of a comfort zone as well as fear of success or failure, then it is time to do something different. To focus on upgrading your mindset rather than spending more time and effort on improving skills. How do you upgrade your mindset? There are many books and educational approaches available. However, I propose it is not about learning more stuff… it is about going under the surface and changing the subconscious beliefs, the originating thoughts that create your everyday behaviors.
