Linchpin Mindset

Linchpin, by Seth Godin, is a thought provoking book about making a difference… about being the difference. Have you accepted that you are average and view your life through your average comfort zone? Or, are you seeing opportunities… creating opportunities… trusting and launching into the opportunity?

So what is a linchpin?

The dictionary defines ‘linchpin’ as

  1. a pin passed through the end of an axle to keep a wheel in position.
  2. a person or thing vital to an enterprise or organization.

What makes a person vital to an organization?

  • Position level?   NO
  • Particular skill or talent? Maybe
  • Attitude of making things better? YES
  • Creating value? YES
  • Willing to make the different choice? YES
  • Ability to recognize fears and transform them? YES
  • You get the idea – there is more so read the book!

What do you notice about  the list? Overall, it is about internal drive and commitment rather than external acceptance and entitlement. It is about taking responsibility for what is happening in your life and your business while knowing that you have a choice to change it. The linchpin does not wait for their budget to increase; they don’t wait for their boss to say okay… they work within the box they have yet are pushing the edge or leaning into to the edge.

Their focus is how to make something better while respecting others. As Godin shares, it is not about only taking care of yourself — it is about improvement that is from the heart and from a place of caring about others. It is about giving a gift without any expectations attached.

What can you do to begin being a linchpin? According to Godin, there are 7 ways to be indispensable which can be summarized as being generous with your time, energy and ideas while maintaining your dignity of self  respect and respect for others and doing it all from humility.

Every day, every minute, it is all about choice —
“The only thing we have to do is remember that we control the harnessing of (the power of choice).
Don’t let your circumstances or habits rule your choices today.
Become a master of yourself.” from Linchpin, Seth Godin
