Clever verses Kind Mindset
Have you ever figured something out and made a clever comment that actually belittles someone or makes them feel bad? Sometimes we think from our perspective how smart we are while not realizing the impact our comment has on someone else. Which mindset is one that increases your success? Clever and smart (aleck)? Or, Kind and caring?
I love the TED conference videos and just received notice of a video via TED that I wanted to share. It is actually not from a TED conference but from the recent Princeton Graduation ceremony where Jeff Bezos, Amazon creator, gave the commencement speech (only 18 minutes). His focus was about choice. That we each have a choice everyday about each situation… whether to be clever or kind, caring or selfish, accepting our ‘place’ in life or working to create and live what energizes us.

Have you accepted: ”That is just the way I am.” or ”I can’t change.”
You are the way you are because of your previous experiences and accepted information. What you learned can be changed. Begin by becoming aware of what you are saying or doing. Rather than go through your day automatically… stop and observe what your habitual response is to something… but before you act, stop and think… is this the best response or just my habit? Is this a reactionary behavior or am I consciously aware of what I am doing or saying?
Being clever can also come in the form of passive aggressive comments… these do not create a trusting relationship; they do not motivate employees or make you look ‘good’. Being kind provides you with more possibilities and opportunities. As often said, ‘You’ll catch more bees with honey than vinegar.’
This applies both personally and professionally, whether you are a sales person, a team leader, a production worker or the CEO.
